Taking Care of Your Hydrangea

Everyday Care

Your hydrangea likes spots where it gets sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. Water it about once a week, or when the soil feels dry two inches down. Feed your plant with fertilizer once a year in summer. If any branches grow too wild, you can trim them to keep your plant looking nice.

Planting Outside

If you want to plant your hydrangea in the garden, pick a spot with good drainage that gets some shade. Dig a hole twice as big as the plant's roots, place it in, fill with soil, and water it well to help it settle in.

Winter Protection

When cold weather comes, bring your hydrangea inside. Cut back on watering during winter. Don't worry if some leaves fall off - this is normal. After your plant flowers, give it a trim to help new growth appear in spring.

Growing in Pots

Choose a pot that holds 3-5 gallons and has holes for water to drain. Fill it halfway with potting soil, then gently loosen the roots of your hydrangea before placing it in the center. Add more soil, press it down lightly, and water. Keep your potted hydrangea where it gets some sun, but not all day.
